Cranmore Pupils

Senior Department | Latin

At present Latin is taught at two distinct levels: Scholarship and Common Entrance.

While the immediate aim of both courses is to prepare boys for their respective exams, it is hoped that an interest in our own culture and civilisation will be generated as well as an appreciation of the technicalities of our own language and also that through the learning and application of the rules of grammar boys will gain some training in logical and reasoned thought.

Scholarship work is begun in the 3 rd Forms at the age of nine and follows a four year course preparing for the Scholarship exams of the Public Schools. The majority of Public Schools still regard Latin as an important discipline and this is the case at the Royal Grammar Schools where over 50% of our candidates go.

At Common Entrance Latin is an option although many schools are increasingly keen for boys to have done some Latin. CE candidates start Latin in the 3rd Form and study the subject for 4 years. Those not opting for Latin do extra ICT in the 5th and 6th Forms.
