Cranmore Pupils

Sport | Rugby

Rugby is played during the Spring Term in Class One (N.C. Yr.3) and above. The School Teams have full fixture lists and also enter several County and National tournaments. The Surrey Youth Development Officer is a regular visitor to the School. He organises training sessions for the boys and runs Inset courses for the School team coaches. We also bring in other outside coaches from professional clubs or senior schools, thus keeping practices interesting and “fresh.” All staff coaching Rugby hold National Governing Body and Referees Awards.

Rugby is a contact sport, and every effort is made to minimise risks by coaching good technique, matching boys in ability groups and following the R.F.U. continuum. At Cranmore we do not select “mixed aged” teams. In each year group there are at least three teams playing regular fixtures. These range from Tag Rugby in the Junior Department to the full 15 a side fixtures at the top of the Senior Department. Towards the end of the season all the age groups enter festivals and 7 a side tournaments.

The School is affiliated to the Rugby Football Union, and is a member of Surrey Schools' R.F.U., one of the benefits being a regular supply of tickets for boys and parents for home international matches and other top games at Twickenham. The School also has excellent links with local clubs, and works closely with local coaches to ensure continuity for the boys.
