Junior Department | English

During their time in the Junior Department our boys develop their understanding of both spoken and written language. English lessons are lively, stimulating and, above all, fun.

We aim to provide a solid foundation in this key area of learning. Enthusiastic staff provide a challenging curriculum which combines high standards with traditional teaching recognizing the needs and requirements of the individual child.

Each child has access to a variety of thought provoking, creative and appropriate language activities which develop skills in observation, recording, information seeking, questioning and problem solving.

Reading is highly valued. We aim to stimulate interest in the world of literature and develop each boy's enthusiasm and fluency. Reading is taught primarily through the phonic approach, however we are aware that young readers should have access to as many strategies as possible and therefore offer a wide range of reading material at all levels. The boys read daily, on an individual basis, until complete fluency is achieved. We work closely with parents and expect the boys to read each evening. Learning to read is seen as an exciting adventure upon which our intrepid explorers eagerly depart in a quest for knowledge.

We are now using our dedicated Junior Library, which greatly enhances our commitment to developing a love of books and reading, access to information sources and an awareness of the world of children's literature.
