Junior Department
Programmes of study are generally linked to the National Curriculum, but in most cases go beyond those expectations. Emphasis is placed on the need to develop skills in Literacy and Numeracy but also to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that includes science, geography, history, art and technology, ICT, music, drama, French and sport. Small classes staffed by well-qualified teachers enable boys to reach their potential. Specialist teachers in music, sport, swimming and French also enhance the boys’ learning.
Senior Department
Boys enter the Senior Department in the Second Form when they are 8+.
The academic objective of this department is to prepare boys for the Common Entrance or Scholarship examinations at 13+ for entry to their choice of Senior School, and to give them a strong foundation to approach these examinations with the confidence to succeed. Cranmore has an enviable record, with virtually every boy each year passing into their first choice Senior School, and with over 120 boys in the last 10 years gaining academic scholarships.
Underlying this objective is our philosophy that each boy should work at the highest level of which he is capable and thus, without any undue pressure, fulfil his potential. Towards the end of the third year in the Senior Department, after detailed discussion, standardised tests and internal examinations, the boys are then placed either in the Scholarship class or in one of the two parallel Common Entrance classes.
Our aim is to provide a broad and balanced education, and all boys study a wide range of subjects taught by specialist teachers.
The core subjects are English, Maths and Science, and compulsory subjects for Common Entrance and most Scholarship examinations are French, Religious Education, History, and Geography. All boys also have lessons in PSE, Music, Art, ICT, Design Technology, PE and Games, while some year groups have Drama lessons. Boys in Form 3 and 4 are taught Latin and after this all Scholarship boys and some Common Entrance boys study Latin.
Boys who have specific learning difficulties or who have particular problems with English and Maths may be given specialist help.
