During their time in the Junior Department, the boys develop their understanding of both spoken and written language. Each pupil has access to a variety of thought provoking and creative language activities which develop skills in observation, recording, information seeking, questioning and problem solving.

All boys have an English lesson every day and from Middle Prep (Year 1), weekly spellings are set and tested. As with all English tasks, the spellings are differentiated according to individual ability.

Reading is highly valued. We aim to stimulate interest in the world of literature and develop each boy's enthusiasm and fluency. Reading is taught primarily through the phonic approach, however we are aware that young readers should have access to as many strategies as possible and therefore we offer a wide range of reading material at all levels. Boys progress through the reading scheme at their own pace.
